I am performing some analysis on an existing log framed structure. All walls in this room are log framed (~10.5" Dia.) with round notches.
The client wants to open up / remove a wall that already has a door opening in it by removing many logs to create an opening in the existing wall all the way to the corner.
The question is this: how much of the existing wall should remain so that the 90 degree corner where logs are notched together so that the joint remains stable. The contractor I believe is concerned that due to the joint geometry, if the wall was for instance cut flush, the integrity of the interlocking ./ stacked logs may be compromised.
