loaded interference fit 2

hello!

i have a situation where i am press-fitting a rod into a plate, and then loading the other end of the rod. the load is parallel to the plate.

we have differing opinions over here about how to best find the stress on the plate from both the interference fit and the load. can anyone clarify how to find the stress on the plate?

The plate will have an in-plane stress from the interference fit, see The rod will apply a direct load and bending moment to the plate. I'm not sure but look in Roark for that formula.
 
The answer will depend in large part on the sizes of the parts and the magnitude of the load. If the press-fit rod is sufficiently far from the plate supports, the problem can be split in two. A solution for a press fit can be found in Shigley and others. Then, as Corus noted, the plate can be analyzed independently.

FEA would almost be overkill in this case. But if the sizes and magnitudes involved give you pause and you have access, try it. But do the hand calculations anyway. It's always recommended to attempt the solution in a different way, e.g., pen and paper, and reconcile the two.
