I am looking for the best possible material for load pins. Currently, I am thinking of using 17-4 PH SS heat treated to H900. Is there something available that has similar yield strength (~200,000 psi), but with better Charpy Impact resistance values?

For shear load? If so, check out spring pins at They list the materials they use with strengths and breaking loads.

There are few materials that will have better fracture toughness than precipitation hardening stainless steels at that type of strength level. The only one that I expect you can readily find data on is AerMet® 100 from Carpenter. It should have somewhat higher fracture toughness/impact strength than PH stainless grades at 200 ksi yield. The following links provide some data on various alloys that can achieve 200 ksi yield and still maintain good toughness:

Type 17-4 PH

AerMet® 100

MP35N

Alloy 725

Custom 455, 465. However, what do you mean load pin? How it us used and loaded. H900 heat treatment should be used carefully. Here is a quote from MIL-HDBK-5J: "The impact strength of 17-4PH, especially large size bar in the H900 and H925 conditions, may be very
low at subzero temperatures; consequently, the use of 17-4PH for critical applications at low temperatures
should be avoided."

Israelkk,
Do you have much experience with Custom 465? I've been doing some research and the properties are excellent, very much what I am looking for? Any drawbacks or unusual properties that I would need to be aware of?
