We are providing supports for pipes with thermal and fluid loads. When applying ASCE 7-05 load combinations, what part of the load combination shall we apply the thermal and fluid reactions.

It is clear where we apply the Gravity and seismic loads but for internal fluid pressures and thermal loads, ASCE is not very clear.

Thanks

Just found the answer.

The California Building Code has a clear definition of F and T which is where the fluid pressure and thermal reactions are to be included.

Be careful where you locate the pipe anchors, guides and supports. You can damage the pipe by over constraining a thermally active piping system. I recommend following ASME B31.1 (Power Piping), B31.3 (Process Piping) or B31.9 (Building Services Piping) depending on the application.

At minimum, use 2008 ASHRAE Handbook chapter 45 to ensure you are not over stressing the pipe.

It can be challenging to find the proper restraint configuration for piping subject to both seismic and thermal loads.

if this is a piperack you may want to use load combination from PIP. it's also based on ASCE but more specific for O&G (ex. pipe friction dont combine with wind)
