Hi everyone, i'm new here but have a question .. i have been a welder for 45 years , my health has forced me into retirement, i want to build a small cabin out of 4 shipping containers on some property i have, its in a flood zone, so i want to build it about 15' off the ground..i need to know what size steel pipe i should use, or maybe wood pilings ...the cabin will weigh about 25 tons at the most , and i havent been able to find usefull info on the load bearing strength of wood or steel....any help would be greatly appreciated , and please keep in mind i am not an engineer lol

Congratulation for your retirement!

Probably you need to hire a local engineer to do the work. It is not only you need a plan showing all items, but wind load, soil type, etc varies and there is no way to get a generic answer. Elevated building for example has wind load lateral to the building and on the lower surface too depends on the width/length/different heights (elevation)/member's span length and distance, etc.

Agree… Just go higher a competent engineer to design this for you. Eng-Tips is it a site meant for getting free engineering services.
