I have a project where I am working with low density polyethylene. The project specifies a minimum amount of allowable permanent deflection under a predefined load.

Does anyone know of a good reference to educate myself on this material? Specificially yield criteria? I'll be using a FEA model so if there is info on how to set up a FEA model that would be great.

Thanks

The viscoelastic nature of polymers makes FEA very different (and difficult) when compared to metallic materials.

Are you aware of how easily LDPE creeps?

I think your project is ill-defined and not likely to succeed.

Cory

I intentionally left the details out because I am not looking for any advice or tips on the project but literature (books, papers, etc.) on LDPE and how to apply it in FEA.

As far as it being hard, yes I anticipate it being hard, but that is what makes it fun and rewarding.

FEA of polymers is not mature like it is for metals. LDPE is practically a fluid. I would perform a literature search using Google Scholar and Scirus to find information on this subject. Also, check technical books published by SPE.

SPE an raw materials suppliers are the best source of this type of information.
