Hello,

Complex steel components (e.g. connections) force me to move from basic 2D design (beam as linear FEM) to 3D elements (beam as solid/3D FEM). Can you recommend me some literature to fresh my out of date knowledge (which stresses to be checked in ‘normal’ problems, ‘shear’ problems, can we allow local plasticity (how much), factor of safety, buckling, etc., etc.). I know there is a lot of literature for modelling such problems but I’m looking for tips & tricks to design them.

Thanks a lot!

Did a quick search on the criterias you're looking for and hope this helps:

Connections in Steel Structures III - Behaviour, Strength and Design (Bjorhovde, Reidar; Colson, André; Zandonini, Riccardo), Design of Steel Structures - Eurocode 3: Design of Steel Structures, Part 1-1 - General Rules and Rules for Buildings (Simões da Silva, Luís; Simões, Rui; Gervásio, Helena), Steel Penstocks (2nd Edition) (Bambei Jr., John H.), Steel Designers' Manual - The Steel Construction Institute (7th Edition) (Davison, Buick; Owens, Graham W.)
