Is there a way to get a list of all of the parts missing in an assembly? We have customers who have trouble giving us all the required parts when they send us assemblies. Up to no, we have just been copying and pasting, into a word doc, the file names from the error notes that pop up when opening the assembly. It seems like there should be another way.

Thanks

Before opening the assy file, click on the References option & expand the resulting window to show the full path of the referenced parts. Then make a screen image (PrtScn). The ones you are missing will be shown at a directory or folder which is not on you system. The scrren image can then be mailed to the customer.

A better way though, would be to get your customer to copy all the files correctly in the first place. If they have SW Explorer the assy and all its children can be copied to another folder. That folder can then be zipped and sent to you. The same function exists in PDMWorks if they have it.

How to get answers to your SW questions FAQ559-1091

Great thanks.

We've explained the SW Explorer option to them, and other customers, before. It never seems to help.

The only problem with the References window is that it only shows one assembly deep. This main assembly has 109 sub-assemblies where the missing parts reside. I could do a seperate References list for each one of the 109 sub-assys but I didn't want to have to do that.

Open the assembly. Choose "No" and "Don't ask me again" when SW asks you if you want to find the missing files. After the assembly opens, click File->Find References. All missing files will show in that list as "Not found". Click "Copy List" and paste into email, Word, etc.

Currently I am having trouble with the assembly. After clicking No to all of the missing files, it gets almost all the way open then crashes. Once I figure what is making that happen, I will try your last suggestion.
Thanks

Instead of using SW Explorer, tell them instead to use File > Find References > Copy Files, and save those to a folder. This will make sure you get all files, and overcome some users laziness or fear of using 1 more program (SW Explorer).

Anyone seen the new "Solidworks explorer" and "Pack and go" in swx2007? Looks like this will be a snap finally.

You can copy an assembly, all parts, and have it find all drawings, add a suffix or prefix...then automatically zip them for emailing.
