linear time-varying systems

Can someone give me a tip on how to solve for the response of a linear time-varying system to arbitrary input? I mean other than numerically solving the ODE. Is there an analog to transfer functions?

For specific systems with specific inputs it may be possible to get closed form solultions but not in the general case.
