I want to use a German type lightweight dynamic cone penetrometer(DIN 4094)to determine the allowable bearing capacity as part of a ground investigation. I remember sometime ago I read that ten times the N10 value gives the allowable bearing capacity in kPa.Can somebody confirm this or give me the correct relationship between the two parameters?

BigH, the european lightweight (DPL) is similar in concept to the Macintosh probe although a little different, a heavier weight is used and blowcount is every 10 cm. Many professionals regard it as a toy, not fit to yield quantitative values of geotechnical parameters, good for shallow layers thickness though, if soft.

I personally like the Canadian pentest - 60deg cone driven with SPT hammer and drop. This is not a toy! Always found it very useful.

BigH, the pentest is probably similar to the super heavy dynamic probe, which has an impact energy similar ot larger than the SPT.

I concur it's very useful, unless the soil is cohesive and the drillpipes start sticking to the borehole, creating fallaciously high blowcounts. Cohesive soils are the realm of the static penetrometer.
