Lead Acid and NiCad battery storage

Any help with the following would be appreciated thanks.

My prior experience with batteries on ships has been that there always is a seperate battery compartment/locker for the lead acid cells and another for the Ni-Cad/Nife cells. I have just recently come across a vessel where the seperate battery banks are planned to be in a combined locker. Is this an acceptable practice ??

There are no regulatory requirements (say to Lloyds shipping regs)which insists on segretion of batteries types.A segretion is more out of choice.
A point to note is that Ni cad batteries (especially the sealed recombination type)are more widely used these days.
