Does anyone have experience using layers?

I have created layers on a drawing and added certain symbols that when the drawing is checked in, i require them to be 'off' or hidden. Is it possible to switch off layers in the reference state, and only on demand, switch them on?

I do not think you can unhide a layer while the drawing is referenced. You can make a local copy and do it but not when the drawing referenced. You can make a program file to accomplish what you need before checkin. Layers in I-Deas is not to user friendly.
