Laterally loaded pile next to pipeline

Hello,

I'm working on the following problem and would like to see if anyone out there has solved something similar or has a recommendation for a paper or solution methodology:

There is a 8 ft diameter vertical drilled shaft subject to lateral loads next to a buried 12 in diameter horizontal pipeline. I need to approximate the stress on the pipeline that will result from the lateral movement of the drilled shaft towards the pipeline.

Lateral stress in this case varies with pier depth-it is higher at the top near the lateral load point of application and disiipates to a small value at 5 to 8 ft depth. The effect of this lateral stress can be minimized if you limit your lateral deflection at the ground surface to between 0.3" - 0.5". A sketch and some soils values will help.

For exact equation, refer to eqn 5.60e on page 240 of "Engineering Design in Geotechnics", 2007, Azizi. I got my copy from the UK Amazon, direct from the author (Approx $50). It is overpriced in the US Amazon site. It is now my most enjoyable geotechnical reference and has just about everything any foundation design text covers.

However, if you need a fast solution, go to and look at "LATPILE" program. This program has a column whcih displays the lateral pressure with depth after you input your soils parameters and pier geometry.
