I'm interested in getting opinions on lateral stresses on a given element on soil at a depth below grade, x, induced by new foundation loads or embankment loading.
For the sake of discussion, what kind of lateral increase in stress would you expect to see on an element below a new foundation load in 1.an NC sand, 2. an NC saturated clay, 3. an OC sand, and 4. an OC saturated clay? What about the four cases above under a newly constructed large earth embankment? What is the change in lateral stress of an element in terms of a percentage of the new vertical stress at the depth in question? For example, is an increase in lateral stress of about 30% of the change in vertical stress at the depth in question reasonable? In terms of total stress? Effective stress?
