Is there such a thing as a laser screen? I am thinking of having a series of horizontal lasers so that when objects pass through the screen I can tell which lasers were tripped and when they were tripped. I could use that information to build a profile of the object that broke the screen. It does not have to be super accurate ±1/2” on the profile would be OK. I know that the accuracy has to do with spacing of the lasers.

After I build the profile I would like the lasers to vaporize the object…Just kidding, couldn’t resist I don’t get to talk about lasers very much.

Does this thing exist? If so where can I buy it or where can I buy components to build it? Thanks

We use a similar thing called a shadowgraph. Not quite as exciting as lasers.

If all you want is a profile, make sure the background is relatively free of crap, use a webcam to snap a B/W pic, and do thresholding... instant profile, accurate to the pixel level of your camera.

Lasers are often overrated, even if attached to the heads of sharks.

This is going to be used to scan installed pipe. I cannot keep the background steady it will change with the building. I will be using the profile to locate the center of the coupling. There is an automated process that will be preformed after that.
