My company had a requirement for automating the alignment and verification of key elements of our thermal printer head assembly. The selected laser would not read the first surface quartz overcoat, used for the heater line.
I was able to get the laser to work by tipping the laser 22.5 degrees towards the laser emmiter. This, after having designed/fabricated and fully assembling our production machine. We have found work arounds, but they were not without much effort during the process development phase.
Lesson learned: create very detailed criteria for outside vendor testing to ensure product component campatability.
