Guys,

i am aware that labyrinth seals are used for minimizing gas leakages.

Could anybody confirm to me the following:

Is interstage labyrinth seals in multistage centrifugal compressor used for limiting axial thrust across each impellers in addition to minimizing gas leakage to the preceeding impeller stage.

If the gas is stiffled by the interstage labyrinth, does it also reduce the axial thrust across each impeller stage similar to centrifugal pump impeller wear ring clearances. Or am I confusing the two?

Please confirm if interstage labyrinth also reduces the axial thrust across each impeller stage.

I am aware that balancing drum/piston is used for the overall axial thrust balancing of the compressor by equalizing the outboard pressures (suction and discharge).

Can anyone shed more light.
