looking for information on a kings berry babbit thrust vertical I understand how an horizontal babbit bearing works using the rotor weight to check for high spots on the lower half of the babbit sit and scraping the to maximize the coverage. How ever I dont understand the principle of a vertical and how you check that babbit riding surface to the shaft??

You might try searching the internet for "Kingsbury Thrust Bearing" (note the spelling) or "pivoted shoe thrust bearing"

Suggestion: The subject bearing:
is certainly a big progress since 1880. However, it still leaves some wear when the rotating parts start and coast down since they cause to have metals land on each other. Where this is not acceptable, magnetic bearings could be considered. They use magnetic levitation principles, similarly as magnetically levitated trains. Visit
(Magnetic Bearings 1)
etc. for more info
