JOINED PART & MATES GOING BAD?

When I create a joined part from an assy the mates associated with the assmbly that have been consumed by the new joined part now have invalid features to mate with. Do I just delete the bad mates, and if so will the joined part and assy update if the features/sketches are changed later?
