JIS5K standard flange for API 650 manholes 1

Does the code allow tank fabricator to utilize JIS5K standard flange(SORF and blind flange) for 24" manhole according to API-650.
Any input are welcome.

5.7.5.5 - In lieu of using Figure 5.7a or design per API 620, forged flanges and forged blind flanges may be furnished
per 4.6.

5.7.6.1.b - Shell nozzles (and flanges, if specified by the Purchaser as an alternate to a. above) shall conform to
Figure 5.7b, Figure 5.8, and Figure 5.10 and Tables 5.6a through 5.8b, but other shapes are permitted by 5.7.1.8. An
alternative connection design is permissible for the nozzle end that is not welded to the shell, if it provides equivalent
strength, toughness, leak tightness, and utility and if the Purchaser agrees to its use in writing.


Thank you for your prompt reply. As i understanding from above statement, other standard flange are allow. please correct me if i am wrong.

But it is applicable to shell manholes as well ?

I would assume so, the shell manway item lets you use shell nozzle details and blind flanges, which are normally much much heavier than shell manway construction, and the other section would let you use grooved openings or other types flanges, etc., with approval of the owner.

We are using this type of shell manhole (SORF) and Blind flange as a cover in my previous project.

It is quite heavy.

Appreciated your reply.
That is the reason our client insist on JIS stnadard flange instead of B16.5 flange for shell manhole.
The weight of JIS flange is much much more light than B16.5 flange.

Why not use API 650 manway flanges and cover plates? They are proven to work, are much lighter and are much less expensive.

Client preferred JIS flange more than API 650 manway flange and cover.
Well.. It's client choice.
