I want to find out if anyone has used diagonal coupling beams above an opening in a single story concrete shear wall (per ACI 318-05 Ch. 21)? What were the detailing ramifications?
I have used them in multi-story applications where the force demands just below the roof did not require the use of the intersecting diagonal reinforcement. We are dealing with single story shear walls that support a podium slab with 4 stories of wood frame above. The architect is insisting on a couple openings in one of the heavily loaded walls and analytically, the intersecting diagonal reinforcement will be required per ACI 318-05 with the opening configuration. The shear walls are close to 20' tall giving us some room to work with.
