we just got inventor 2011 at work but we can't figure out where to get nuts, bolts, bearings etc. I am pretty sure hardware (nuts & bolts) comes with. Any help here will be appreciated we are obviously new to the 3d world so again any help will be great.

Did you install the standard content libraries when you installed the software? If not put the disc back in and choose to install the libraries you think you will use.

If you have but they are not available you may have to add the libraries to your project file. Select the button just up to the right of the done button in the projects window. It is called Configure Content Centre Libraries.

If you are having trouble placing parts, then select the drop down next to place component and select place from content centre. Also check out the design accelerators under the design tab.
