Interfacing excel with MATLAB

Hi,

Is there a function using which i can read the number of rows that are populated in an excel spreadsheet? The thing is that the number of data rows in the excel file that has to be picked up and processed using my MATLAB program is dynamic. So, i need the program to detect how many rows it has to pick up before actually going into the loop for performing the xlsread.
