Improving Fatigue Life

There was quite a bit of discussion pertaining to extending fatigue life in the above-referenced thread. However, I saw nothing suggesting the use of ultrasonic impact treatment. Shot peening was mentioned as a treatment method, but UIT's ability to more effectively and quickly improve surface condition and introduce compressive stresses, makes it a superior application method. If your unfamiliar with ultrasonic impact treatment, there's a video at detailing it's applications and benefits. I'm just curious as to why this wasn't mentioned as a solution.

looks like a much neater method ... gets rid of all that buck-shot !

"ultrasonic" is a little misleading (to me at least) ... the method applies a surface compression by physical impact. I wonder how much force is involved? and with that how much does the operator affect the result ?? (i mean he is the reaction loadpath for the impacts on the work-piece).
