Many industry specific standards exist such as FM 7605, Programmable Logic Control (PLC) Based Burner Management Systems that I have never read.

IEEE covers most of the communication protocols.

IEC 61131 is available in at least eight parts. IEC established a programming standard for ladder and other logic. Most manufacturers are compliant. The design of safety systems should comply the lates ISA 84.00.01 or IEC 61511 or 61508 and include TUV rated components. The rapid changeing technology is one problem with PLC related codes and standards. ANSI/ISA–S91.01–1995 is titled "Identification of Emergency Shutdown Systems and
Controls That Are Critical to Maintaining Safety in Process Industries". Also check IEC 61131 and 60167 to see if they may apply.
