Dear all,

premium efficiency IE3 async motors will be mandatory next year in many countries (U.S. already by 2011, others later). I wonder if driving an IE2 motor with a VFD will be considered acceptable or not. In my opinion the savings in starting and stopping cycles may justify this approach. I'm not looking for legal advice, just a technical point of view.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Sounds like a politician's solution to a non-problem, to me. Wonder if anyone has given any thought to the much-higher starting inrush currents these premium efficient motors have.

I should have added that, in view of the apparent lack of technical excellence displayed in the original edict, I doubt anyone in authority has considered the technical aspects of IE2 and IE3 motors on VFD's.
