I recieved a .dwg from an engineer

I recieved a .dwg from an engineer today that was drawn in Autocad 2004 and i couldn't open it, I run Autocad 2000.
00 and 04 are not compatible?

YOU CAN NOT OPEN 2004 W/ 2000. YOU CAN CONTACT THE ENGINEER AND HAVE HIM SAVE THE DRWG IN 2000 WHICH IS A FEATURE UNDER TOOLS>OPTION>SAVE FOLDER AND SEND YOU THAT REVISED SAVED DRWG.
