I have a sling over an angle iron, L2"x2"x3/16", and I'm calculating the hoist capacity. I was just wondering if I should use 0.60Fy as the allowable bending stress, or if I should use a smaller value. I couldn't find anything in AISC-ASD vol. 9 about bending stresses in angles. I'm assuming that 0.60Fy will be fine because the angle is only 70" long and I can't see how an equal leg angle would laterally buckle.

It sounds most irregular to be lifting with an angle. What mass are you lifting?

Thanks for the info Taro and dik. dbuzz..I'm just analyzing what I believe to be the attachment point for holding a cover open. Can't be more than 150lbs.
