I have a 1 HP,115 volt,12.4 Amp,single phase Ac Motor which I use on my wood lathe. I've beem looking for a variable speed control. I want to slow the speed but keep the torque. The ones that I have found cost more than what I could purchase a DC motor and control.Does some know of a cheaper control or a different way of controlling my motor?

Suggestion: Perhaps within a small speed range, the voltage drop by autotransformer or resistor could suffice. When it comes to the speed variation over wide speed range, then the variable frequency drive is most appropriate.
