I am an MSc Mechanical Engineering student and I need to apply uniaxial compression on a foam cube which contains a void within it. I am having difficulty on creating the void without create a see through hole in the cube. Could somebody outline some steps I could use to achieve my goal. Thank You.

What precision and accuracy is required for the void and what kind of foam? A sufficiently loose foam could be everted through a small hole, the new exterior is removed and the structure reverted to its original geometry, resulting in a interior void.

Alternately, some sort of laparoscopic tool could remove material through a small hole for foams that can't be everted.
