It is not a good practice to use a ground point for a neutral and is contrary to code in some areas.
However, it is acceptable and normal practice to use the generator wye point. The wye point is the neutral.
Said another way, it is normal and acceptable to connect your neutral conductor to the wye point in the generator terminal box. There may be a ground conductor connected to the wye point also. If this conductor is connected directly to the generator frame, you should not connect a neutral to the end connected to the frame.
Some sets have for conductors running from the connection box to the breaker box. The neutral conductor may be treated as an extension of the wye point and both a grounding conductor and a neutral conductor connected to this conductor in the breaker box.
This is subject to local codes and this is an international forum. Where are you?
