Hi Guys,
I am designing an oil boom using PVC Reinforced Polyester. Material thickness is 0.9mm. I have determined the Breaking Strength (Grab Test Method) for fabrics as per ASTM D751-06 (2011) and the result is around 3500 N/50mm.
1. How do I calculate the burst pressure based on the strength?
2. What is the typical working gauge pressure for oil booms?
3. How do I determine how much internal pressure is needed to maintain sufficient rigidity?
4. Why is the unit output expressed in N/50mm instead of the typical N/m2 (Pa) or Psi? I understand that 50mm is the width of the jaw face used to clamp the specimen during testing. So can we convert N/50mm to N/m2 by calculating the cross sectional area (50mm x 0.9mm)?
Please advise.
