How things changed from 2004...

They all pretty much have; legacy compatibility and inevitable source code bloat.

But, there are new applications that didn't even exist that are productivity enhancers as well as some programs that have gotten better or more capable

PicoScope - these were introduced in the '90s, but the software and its continual upgrades (and user modifiability) makes a small usb a/d device into a remarkably capable, fully featured o-scope that would have cost several kilobucks back in the old days.
