How do I make SW08 faster.

We've finally been forced to switch to SW08 from SW07. I've turned off some of the obvious performance drags: shadows, reflections, etc, but it still seems slower than SW07. Is there a comprehensive list of "features" to turn off to return it to 2007 level performance? We're running on laptops (Dell Precisions), so we don't have too many extra GPU cycles to devote to realviewesque graphical goodies.

Should we skip right on up SW09 or does the performance get worse?

Thanks,

b

That depends who you talk too. Some have nothing but problems with SW09 while others say it's the best version yet.

Which SP of SW08 are you using?
Have you updated the video driver for SW08?
Which mouse and driver?
Are other processes running?
Are you running Desktop Search and Indexing?
Which Anti-virus? Try disabling it temporarily.
Are you working over a network or locally?
Try using SW in a smaller window (not maximised).

There are too many things which can affect speed and performance.

I'm specifically looking for things that will make it more "07-ish". Many pretty new (and old) graphic intensive features seemingly are enabled by default. These features are slowing things down. The obvious things are the realtime rendering/shadows/reflections/glowing highlights. I'm just curious if I missed anything else.

We are on the latest SW recommended video driver. 2007 runs fine. Other processes, etc are probably not an issue.

While I don't care for the new UI changes, 08 does finally allow sketches to be copied via the insert part functionality, which is reason enough to keep it. It just seems slower.

Forgot to add that we are on SP5.0.

Make sure you have Instant 3D turned off, and make sure the windows desktop search function is disabled. Turn off Realview if it bogs down the craptop too much, and turn off any Add-ins that aren't absolutely necessary for the task at hand.

SW2008 will be slower at the begining as it has to covert your 2007 stuff. It will become faster when all your files will be converted.

SW2008 is a dog. I just "upgraded" to it to take care of a couple of client-specified projects. Most notably is the lag in capturing dimensions for things--the window takes its time in popping up completely, so when you type at the speed you used with v2007, it fails to capture the first few digits.

I thought that had been solved with v2009, but no--still a terrible lag. (I'm beating this horse for a reason--I'd like a little attention from SolidWorks on this--major productivity bummer. Worked fine in v2007, released nearly THREE years ago.)

And remember kids, v2009 is "up to 65% faster".

Just to be clear: SW07 runs fine. We've long ago disabled desktop search and looked for other gremlins in the system. Unless SW08 is particularly affected by some background process I think we're OK on that front.

I want to make sure that there's not more options than the ones I've mentioned to hunt down and disable.

Other than a couple of specific issues, I've really not noticed much slower performance with v2008 than v2007. I tend to use nearly the same degree of RAM with my assemblies, but I've got plenty (for a 32-bit OS). Are you running out of RAM with things? What sort of speed issues are you seeing?

This is the kind of thing I'm noticing. I'll make a point to make more detailed notes.

CBL: I'm using a dell 3 button mouse.

Are you able to switch to a Logitech mouse and driver?

When I first upgraded to SW08, I was having the slow Ctrl+Tab, slow R (recent) key selection, slow dimension, slow you name it. Switched from MS mouse with Intellipoint driver to Logitech and Setpoint, and it was like night and day. Everything just worked the way it should. Magic! I've stayed with Logitech ever since, although I believe that Intellipoint is no longer a problem.

I've got a Logitech MS Revolution with the SetPoint software--love how I can map the easy-to-reach Back button on my mouse to the S key shortcut (for v2009). Nice detail. But I don't know of any Logitech mouse driver causing delays.

The only way I got SW2008 working was to reformat the computer which removed any trace of SW2007.

Once I got into SW2008 i realized that it really wasnt worth switching.

Now im in SW2009 - it still isnt as good as 2007

The biggest piss off now is that 2007 doesnt run on Vista or else id just go back and stay with 2007.
