I have a plate that I’d like to engrave with a logo. I had a designer create a fancy logo but how do I go about importing the design and extrude-cut into the plate. What type of file do I need save the logo under?

Designer save as DXF. In SW open DXF.
You can import it onto a drawing as DXF, then copy it
onto your part.

drivefast,

A lot of artists are picky about their logos. Can you bring the artist in house and teach them some SolidWorks?

If the logo designer used Adobe Illustrator, SW07 and 08 can import ".ai" format files.

Ok, I had the designer send me just the line layout in a dxf file. I then pasted it onto the surface I needed to cut into. Is there a way to manipulate the location of the sketch plane that contains the logo to better fit the surface?

"Is there a way to manipulate the location of the sketch plane that contains the logo to better fit the surface? "

"Sketch plane" or sketch elements?

Did you import/paste the DXF into an open (feature creation) sketch or into a Sketch Picture?

I import/paste the DXF into an open (feature creation) sketch.

You should be able to just add dimensions to the sketch elements to position them. Maybe create a Block of the sketch first.

Or use the Move command.

This may not be a choice for you, but if it is:

Once you get the position and the Sketch done. Before you cut or extrude it into the model. Offset a surface at a depth and extrude to the that surface and then hide the surface.

Just an update I had the designer sent the logo as a .ai file. This not only gave me a nicer logo (more points used in the bends creating a smoother image) but I was able to move and rotate and scale the sketch. Thanks for all you help.

Hi - I'm a total newbie here, please be gentle...

>>> Just an update I had the designer sent the logo as a .ai file

Luxology's modo software imports .ai files as bezier curves, as shown by the short QuickTime movie at
My question for Mr. drivefast or anyone else is: when Solidworks is used to import .ai files, do the Illustrator curves come in as curves, or during the import process do they get frozen down to points?

>>> more points used in the bends
seems to imply a freezing into points during import

At in the second column "Enhanced Adobe Products Support" is mentioned.

Does anyone know if this means that the SW 2008 version might have the .ai bezier curve import capability (if that capability is not in 2007 and earlier versions)?

Thanks! :)
