How do I create link/global variables in assembly for use on multiple parts

Hello,

I am currently building a type of enclosure and wondering how I can link the heights of the different parts in my assembly together so that if 1 height is changed they all change in the assembly. I created a linked variable on one part but when I go to reference it on my other part in the assembly it does not show up. Can anyone guide me through a process, if there is any, where I can have a variable referenced among multiple parts in an assembly?
