how do hems meet at a corner? sw01+

no this isn't a joke like, "why did the hems cross the sheetmetal part...". I like the new hem feature on 2001+ but I can't seem to figure out how to create hems that converge at a corner without them overlapping. I know about miterflanges but it won't let me do them as hems. It also won't let me edit the hem profile like you can with flanges. I've tried extruding cuts and adding fillets with no luck also. What can be done? Thanks.

I am trying to understand your problem, FIrst of all we should take a look at what service pack you are on. Second of all, the hems, should act just like the miter flange when it arrives at a corner. I tried what you said and I took a simple (flat rectangular part with a sqaure notch cut out of one corner), applied sheet metal bends (which of course there were none), and then began putting hems on it, that meet at a common corner. The results I acheived were to have the hems meet, and the appropriate cut was made for clearance. It worked for both outside and inside corners.

Also, with hems, you do not have the ability to edit the "profile" beyond the predefined hem types offered. You should be allowed to switch from one type to another, and change certain parameters, but you will not be allowed to create custom profiles.


So lets try and figure out why yours does not work that way.

Can you tell me which service pack you are currently on, and just how you went about trying to create the hems?
This would be helpful to figure this situation out I am currently using SWX 2001+ SP2.0.... You?

I'm on service pack 0.0 but when I go to check for new service packs it says I have the latest version. I guess that means my subscription is incorrect or something. I created the hems on a flat sheetmetal part (extruded or thin) with no corner cut features. I selected the "hem" icon, chose an edge, length and type. I then created another hem the same way on the edge perpendicular to the first one. The hems just overlap and it doesn't give me any indications that it is a complex bend condition or the like. If I add a corner cut to the flat part before the hems it still just gives rectangular hems, no mitering. I guess if I can get me a copy of the latest service pack it will fix this and other problems I'm having. Thanks.

I got it now. I found out I can select more than one edge to hem in each step. If I choose both edges and then hem in one step it adds the miter and allows imput of the miter gap. thanks for all your help. - FWIW - I just upgraded my service pack....

Yep yep yep, Now you're cooking with gas!!!

That would be a rather important step! Nontheless, you definately do not have the current Service pack. The latest release is level 2.0 so go to

http://www.solidworks.com/swdocs/Support/Subscription/html/?sessionvar=0&auth_session=0,

and enter you serial number and othe info. make sure that you get the appropriate one by selecting sp0.0 and your correct O/S. If you are a toolbox user, make sure that you update your toolbox installation as well (download and run the tolbox file), and afterwards, dont forget to update your help file too. These you just download, unzip and place them in the appropriate diretory, There should be a few .chm files in there.
