I need to surround an area with a chain link fence - or a reasonable facsimile of one - for a Photorender job. I imagine a thin protrusion with a pattern of cutouts, but that would be a pretty heavy part for video regen and render time... Any ideas for a quick and dirty?

Depends what you really need. If the fence is far away from the object then map a jpg or the like to a surface and it will look like a fence. If you need to see through the fence try creating a surface for the fence. Then creat a small cut using surfaces and a surface transform to copy the cut then pattern the cut. Surfaces work much faster.
