Hello

After creating a model..
How can I get a pencil effect similar to these ones with NX or SW?
I don't know if I can achieve it with their default renderers or if I need some special render, such as Keyshot.
I don't know if I can get it while viewing the model in 3D or if it's just for 2D drawings or even if I need to postprocess the image with photoshop.

regards

You could possibly export as images and Photoshop them

While I can't speak for Solid Edge, with NX, go to...

View -> Visualization -> Artistic Image...

...where you will find eight different 'rendering' engines which can be used to produce various types and styles of 'Artistic' Images. Below is an example showing first the normal shaded image of a model, then an image using the 'Hand Drawn' rendering engine set to produce as smooth and as accurate an image as possible and the lastly, using the same 'Hand Drawn' rendering engine, only this time with settings which produced an image with a much more of a 'hand drawn' appearance:

Below are three additional example using first the 'Cartoon' Rendering engine, followed by a 'Stipple' and 'Pencil Shading' examples:

Anyway, I hope this is that sort of thing that you were looking for.

Seems a bit ironic to have spent all the money and development to produce these highly accurate and precise design tools to get rid of vellum drawings, yet there are these tools to make the drawings look like vellum drawings.

IRstuff, it's all about keeping marketing/management happy.

Just be careful, if Sales/Marketing/Management see a an image that looks vaguely like the real thing they'll assume all the engineering is done and they're ready to release.

Another issue, which is often even more critical, is when you've been asked to submit a proposal to a customer, showing him what appears to be a finished design will often give them the impression that they are no longer in a position to make suggestions for improvements and they may even feel that they've lost control of the project. Showing them something that still looks like the project is in the 'concept' phase may result in a more satisfied customer when the final designs are approved since they will have more confidence that their feedback and ideas were actually taken into consideration.

In my experience, the customer is inclined to make suggestions/changed right AFTER they still were in that position and when the design was already approved.
But maybe that's just me..

Hm I just tried this and nothing happens when I click 'OK'. What am I missing, do I need some special license for this?

In this particular case, clicking 'OK' simply saves the settings and closes the dailog. The issue is that this particular dialog has not had it's 'UI refresh' yet so it still uses and older scheme where you initiate the function from WITHIN the dialog itself. In other words, the overall dialog is just a 'task environment' from in which you select your method, set your options and launch a render operation. So what you need to do is select the 'Start Shade' button as shown below:

ArtisticImageDialog.png

BTW, the icon next to it erases the image.

Once the image has been created, you can use either the...

File -> Export -> PNG... (or whatever image format you wish; JPEG, GIF, TIFF or BMP)

...to capture the image on your screen.

Still nothing :(

I can see it say 'processing geometry' but nothing happens after that.

I don't know, it's always worked for me.

Do you have a studio visualize license?
I do not and the artistic image looks like it is going to work but produces nothing. I tried creating a high quality image but was limited to gouraud shading. At least the high quality image command was nice enough to tell me why it wasn't working.

Since the license sheet on my system covers ALL of our products (you wouldn't expect anything else now would you ;-) it's not that easy to 'test' what happens if and when a license is NOT present. Granted, I can verify whether a license was needed to make it run (and it is, being checked-out when you hit the 'Start Shade' icon and being checked back in as soon as the rendering is finished), but as for what happens if it's not there, well...

That being said, I'll take it up with the developer(s) and have them check the software.

The only drawback with this method is that it can only create still images and not a continuous rendering.

If somebody is interested I've found that this drawing are also called xylograph, stipple, engraving, guilloche, hedcut or pencil shading. Just google it and you could find alternative ways to get it with other programas as well.

I already assumed that I would need an extra license for this and was actually surprised when the menu opened. Guess I cheered a bit too early.

I'll try that evangelising. Maybe I need bigger glasses as well.
