horse part ii 3

i have a client wanting a design worked out for a flat pattern for a horse sculpture. the flat pattern would be cut and bent into approximate "horse" shape then welded and hammered into form. it seems the best place to start might be a 3D model of a running horse (what they want). can anyone point me in the right direction for a 3D model of a horse? any other tips? ....as this could be a pretty interesting project.

I don't think you are going to be able to get this into SM using SW! AS for a 3D model of a horse, try searching 3DContentcentral.com or search Goggle.

I agree with Scott. Sure you can model it, but the conversion to flattened sheet metal parts cannot be done in SolidWorks. Third part products do exist which approximate this though.

I was considering bringing in the 3d horse model and then working a shelled solid around it. Then making a sheet metal part to form around it to match the shell.

Is there anything out there other than 3Dcontentcentral?

plenty of polygon models out there for purchase, good luck finding a nice nurbs model.

You couldn't turn a shelled nurbs model with uniform thickness into sheet metal even if you wanted to. You could make it a form tool but you can't flatten that either. Out of curiosity, how big is this horse model? how complex and detailed is the horse that you want to make?

An artistic rendering of a horse does not sound that complicated to me, unless you want complete 3D realism. You can cut out two flat pieces, each representing a side of the horse. Cut out a few more pieces to join the two sides together. If these pieces are on top, someone can sit on the horse. The rendering would be abstract, but could look pretty good.

I do not think the sheet metal functions would help you much.

You need somebody who knows how to draw horses.

solidworks isnt the tool but i will tell you what is

3ds max or maya

they have a toolset callet uv mapping where basically you rip the poly model along seams you select or create

its used for tecturing and decalling models for animation purposes and has the advantage that you

the automatic tool will create the flat patterns from the ripped geometry you have a certain deform control curvature on the flat patterns

to simplify it it is more like skin tight cloth being stitched together the advantage is that it will give you flat patterns

in fact i know you will be able to model in solidworks and dump the surfaces into max or maya to get the flat patterns from the poly model
