Hi there.
I'm building a DIY outboard motor using a 36 volt, 800 watt motor for power spinning at about 2600 rpm max using a belt to run power down to the prop shaft.
Now the idea I have for the stuffing box is to use piece of PVC pipe about 1 inch wider than the shaft, have two caps drilled to the same diameter as the shaft, sealed bearings, also at each end of the box, wrap the shaft with stuffing box rated flax, fill the thing with grease and seal it all together.
Basically, it would be CAP, Bearing, grease, bearing, cap with the wrapped shaft going through this.
This would then be sealed to another PVC pipe that houses the drive belt.
I wanted to build a boat with a relatively quiet drive.
Any thoughts on this? Suggestions to improve on this would be appreciated.
