Hilti 150 MAX or Hilti 150 MAX-SD 1

I am designing a new building per the IBC 2009. I need to dowel into an existing concrete wall with an adhesive anchor. Can I still specify the Hilti HIT-HY 150 MAX adhesive? Or do I need to use the Hilti HIT-HY 150 MAX-SD?

Be very careful using adhesive anchors. On a recent project we proof load tested the anchors to two times allowable load and got a 15% failure rate. The main reasons were that there was dirt remaining in the holes after being cleaned (because of incorrect cleaning procedures) and in some cases the hole was only partially filled with adhesive. You should insist that the workers who are actually installing the adhesive anchors have received recent trainig from the manufacturer (they should have a card from the manufacturer stating this) or better still to insist that they receive it for this job and not rely on their remembering the training lesson from months ago; otherwise you can have big problems. Don't rely on the contractor just saying that his workers have received training. I also recommend proof load testing a large percentage (currently we are proof load testing 100%). This does not answer you question, but it perhaps useful experience that I am conveying.

Talk to Hilti directly and they will recommend the right product for you. I believe the "SD" in the max stands for "Seismic Design". In general, the last time I spoke with Hilti, they were pushing the SD adhesive, but both have their uses.

If you ask Hilti they will probably be willing to have a rep on hand when the first anchors are being installed to monitor the installation procedure.

Adhesive anchors have been used in all kinds of projects, thousands of times, and they are a fine solution for many issues, but they do need to be installed correctly and their limitations should be noted.

Hilti does have a newer specification for the 150 MAX product which permits some uses with uncleaned holes:

We saw quite a bit of incorrect installation during development of the certification program. Experienced installers typically performed as poorly as new ones during trials, so be cautious, and emphasize that written directions should be followed closely until the crews get up to speed.

Max 150-SD can be used under " cracked concrete" condition, while 150 MAX is used under "Uncracked concrete condition".

So, depending upon your situation, you should specify SD or without SD.
