Dear Experts,

I am designing a vessel, my client in specifying the use of SA-516-70 for the shell plate. The service is sour (H2S) service and they are asking for HIC testing for the plate material.

However, the vessel diameter is small and for the thickness of the plate it cannot be rolled, therfore I want to use pipe (SA-333 Gr.6 for the shell of the vessel.

My questions is; is it standard practice in the oil and gas industry (petroleum) to HIC test pipe?

Thanks,

Yes - please refer to ISO 15156. Once you have alerted your client to the change in specified materials, they may then review the need for HIC testing and advise you accordingly.
