Hi
Need to make a pump shaft.
The max diameter of the material is approx 4" and
approx 33" long. Part is NLA and the manufacturer.
It's in a dry area, so steel is fine , but
My question is , should I use 4140 HTSR or
C1144 stress proof ?

How much strength do you need?
Neither will HT very deep, but if the normalized or high temp stress relieved condition is fine then use the easiest one to get. I would just go with the 1144.

That's the material I would normally use....
just needed to "bounce" it off an expert

Did the original shaft function adequately for a long time?

What makes it necessary to replace the shaft, rather than restoring bearing journals or seal areas?

Have you made any attempts to ID the original material, still assuming the original provided an adequate service life?

At the very least I'd be testing hardness at several locations on the old shaft.

Shaft broke. Right next to a shoulder. The OEM no longer supplies parts and no drawings etc.
I am making the shaft now out of C1144 stressproof bar .
I have done many like this over the years in my machine shop.
I usually use stress proof as I get great results with it.
The customer , who is not and engineer , was asking what material was
being used...
I though of using 4140 HTSR but went with SP
I just needed to ask the question to an engineering group to get a second opinion
