Hey Experts,

Can any one tell me why we need to flush grind the reinforcement of weld when some attachment was coming on it?

Is it mandatory to do so?

ASME Sec VIII Div.1 UG-82 tells us toground flush the welds prior to fitment of an attachment.

If it is a spot Radiography joint is it mandatory to take the spot under the covered portion of weld?

Flush grind mandate sounds like just a good workmanship issue. You want the attachment to fit up close, for various reasons including inspectability.

Spot RT is not mandatory for the covered portion....unless the inspector tells you that spot. UW-52(a)(3).

Please read UG-82, but slowly.

Draw the stress lines thru metal thickness and thru the weld with its reinforcement and then do the same thing with the reinforcement ground off. What do you see?

1)Avoid pad over pressure retaining weld
2)I suggest 100% RT + PT in the weld under pad, after ground flush. Remember the vent hole.
