Help with Extruded cuts

I drew a custom letter on the face of a base that is 1" thick. How come I can create a Boss/Base out of it but not an Extruded cut (say 1/4" into it) All lines are perfect too, no gaps. Anybody know why I can't do this? Please help.

Check the Merge Result check box. If the feature can't merge with existing solid then a cut cannot be made.
