Help needed in modeling a horizontally curved bridge by STAAD.Pro2004 1

I am trying to model a horizontally curved bridge by STAAD.Pro2004. How do i create this model?

I tried creating rectangular concrete beam and then analyze it.But I am not sure is this OK or not.So I need help.If any one can give me any worked out example it will be better.Then I can point out my mistakes.

Help is much appreciated.

You need to have someone with experience in this matter, preferably at your firm, advise you.

If you have no such experienced advisors, you should not attempt such an analysis in STAAD but by using a more specific application such as MDX for steel bridges or CONSPAN by Bently or ADAPT for concrete bridges. At least with these packages you will get examples and expert technical support. Even then, it is avisable to have a senior engineer checking your work within your firm.

But please tell me an easy way to analyze a curved beam only by any available software.

I suggest that you begin with some reading in the following:

1. ASCE Structural Engineering Journal
2. ASCE Bridge Engineering Journal

You will find articles in each that will demonstrate to some degree what is typically done to model curved bridges in FEA.

Even then I must warn you that there are many, many nuances, especially, in how to connect the various elements of the bridge together. This should be done by an experienced modeler preferably with bridge experience.

I have read some ASCE journals.But i need to know that can I do only the analysis by STAAD.Pro?Is there any way to do this?

Hi

Why don't you try with something very simple. Then you can see if you get the same results from the software as you get "by hand". You have to make sure that you understand what the number from the software represents before you use them.

I have tried for straight beam both by hand and software,both give the same result.But I don't know how to do it when the beam is curved.

When you say you don't know how to do it when the beam is curved, what do you mean?

Don't you know how to calculate it "by hand" or don't you know how to create a curved beam in Staad.Pro?

And that leads back to Qshake's original post, you need somebody with experience in this matter to advise you, preferably at your firm.

I don't mean to be rude but if you can't check STAAD.Pro for a simple problem you probably should't use it for a "real" problem.
