I have a Century Electric Motor that is attached to a really old pipe organ.

It is a Single Phase 1 hp 110/220V Motor.

When i first got to it, I saw there were no brushes in it, so i went ahead and bought some that i thought would fit.

I installed them into the machine, and now the motor spins, but the brushes do not come off. This leads me to two theories. The first being that since the brushes arent tapered, the motor isnt reaching full speed and so the brushes arent coming off. The second is that There might be something wrong with the mechanism that is supposed to take back the brushes. However if it is the latter i dont know how to proceed with repairing it.

Any Ideas?

I will go ahead and taper the brushes, but just in case that is not the issue... help?
