Is anyone familiar with the HeliCAP software know whether the units weight generated for sand and clays when the N-values are entered are 'effective weight'?

per HeliCAP, Gamma = "Soil in-situ unit weight (pounds per cubic foot [pcf] or kilo-Newton per cubic meter). If the soil layer is below the water table, the effective unit weight will be calculated as the in-situ unit weight minus the weight of water."

Thanks PEinc. I actually spoke with someone from the software design group, who confirmed what you said, in-situ in the soil profile = total wt.
