HEC-RAS Modeling Bridges with piers

Does anyone have any familiarity with the mechanics of the momentum equation as it's used to calculate the effects of bridge piers within HEC-RAS? Mainly with respect to the friction component, which can be de-selected prior to calculating the effects.
